News articles indicate potential noncompliance for water takes from the Rakaia River. The Rakaia water Balance model was developed to explain how water consents work on the Rakaia River, as a tool to identify water consent issues, and to explain where the water has gone from the bottom of the river after concerns raised by Anglers. Anglers expressed concerns that mighty Rakaia was now a shadow of its former self to ECan. A recent NIWA report on Angler histories also highlighted the decline in the river .
